Adam built the impressive ranch house. Roberts disdained the assembly-line mindset of serial television, and fought with series writers regarding Adam's lack of independence. Despite the show's success, Roberts departed the series following the 1964–65 season and returned to theater. Attempts to replace him with a Cartwright cousin and Little Joe's maternal half-brother were unsuccessful.
